If you are riding a powerful, strong, fast barrel horse, you are going to want to do all you can to stay quiet in the saddle and stay out of their way and let them work. The horn helps with that.

I learned all on my own. I also didn't have the money to buy barrel horses, and even tho I do now, at 19, I still don't buy trained barrel horses.

The barrel people will be better at timing end but it's going to depend on you the rider and your skill set as well as the horse and how well it's foundation has been laid. Add to that the amount of time you put in to build the barrel foundation and get to speed - literally.

I didn't see Tex Tan mentioned yet.

I don't have anything against other breeds, I just like keeping it simple with a breed that I know can excel in barrel racing (given that they are actually bred with performance lines and have the want to run). My mare is 14.3hh, but basically all leg.

Classic Equine is a really good brand and so is Professional Choice. I like the leather splint boots the best.. Talk Low,Talk Slow,And Don't Say To Much.
