More to the point, this is a pretty good video on the use of Om in a healing meditation practice. Ultimately however, chanting or thinking Om could be considered an intermediate step.

I have heard it said that mental chanting is superior to low-volume chanting, which is superior to loud chanting. I do a few rounds of loud chanting, then I continue doing mental chanting.
