The tomb was built for Mausolus, ruler of Caria, an ancient region of Asia Minor. The building was so impressive that the late king's name became the generic word for significant funeral monuments.
The monument is partly modeled on one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the tomb built at Halikarnassos (modern-day Bodrum in Turkey) for King Mausolus by his grieving wife, Artemisia.
