India has detected seven Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases. Testing costs between Rs 3,000 and Rs 20,000 in Delhi. HMPV, a respiratory virus, usually causes mild symptoms. Severe complications can occur in infants and older adults.

Dr Abhirup Sarkar, laboratory director at Suraksha Diagnostics, told NDTV Profit that the virus is typically detected using the PCR method, the same technique employed to identify the coronavirus.

HMPV primarily affects the upper and lower respiratory tracts and is particularly concerning for vulnerable groups.

Union Health Ministry confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus in India, with infants diagnosed in Bengaluru. Both are recovering. The ministry is monitoring the situation. There is no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment for HMPV.
