Days after Helene made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 4 hurricane, more than 2 million customers remain without power. At least 66 deaths have been confirmed as a result of the storm, at least a third of whom were killed by falling trees.

The governor said Helene dropped 10 to 29 inches of rain on the mountains in parts of the state, resulting in life-threatening landslides and floods. That has prompted reports of up to 1,000 missing, and for some of their loved ones to go searching for them.

Buncombe County officials said more than 1,000 were reported missing, but they expected that number to drop dramatically when cell service is back.
