Cattle feeders and packers were in a standoff most of the week, with beef packers able to push the Monday-Thursday average lower for the five direct-market areas falling $1.23 to $153.84.

Northern sales were in a range of $186-187. Feeder cattle futures were down anywhere from a nickel to 95 cents at the close. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was up 19 cents at $247.43 on September 30.
