Taiwan prosecutors have charged a former mayor of Taipei who heads a small opposition party with accepting T$17.1 million ($522,392) in bribes over a major property development in the capital and misuse of political donations.

Former Taipei mayor and Taiwan People's Party founder Ko Wen-je has been indicted on corruption charges in Taiwan. He is accused of accepting bribes during his tenure as mayor, linked to a real estate development project.

Taipei City Councilor Chen Chung-wen (陳重文) was sentenced to 8.5 years in prison today under the Anti-Corruption Act (貪污治罪條例) for fraudulently obtaining nearly NT$3.7 million (US$11,000) from a government contract.

Taipei City Councilor Chen Chong-wen has been sentenced to nine years in prison for corruption, fined and stripped of his right to hold public office for six years after finishing his sentence. Chen and his associates were found guilty of illegally profiting from a city welfare scheme.
