Professor Peter Gallagher of the The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies said an aurora may be visible as far south as Dublin.

Forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center say that geomagnetic storms could result in some parts of the U.S. ringing in the new year under the northern lights.

After a bevy of solar activity, the Earth will begin the New Year with geomagnetic storms and possible displays of Aurora lights as far south as the Midwest.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said a strong geomagnetic storm may cause an unusually bright northern lights display Monday night.

There’s a chance solar storms may bring northern lights to several northern U.S states just in time for the new year.
