网页Although rare, the species is well distributed. It is generally absent from uplands, urban areas, and major road corridors. The combined 2003-04 population estimate for the two counties was 620 to 830 pairs (approx. 15-20% of the UK population at the time). 网页Barn Owl home ranges are comparatively huge. In the winter they can be up to 5,000 hectares (that’s 7,102 football pitches!) but in summer, when there’s more food about, the area they use most shrinks to about 350 hectares. This equates to 1 km radius around the nest when they are breeding and about 4 km radius at other times.
