BigBoy had a centipede type tender, developed by the Union Pacific Railroad and used with all BigBoys. It had 14 wheels (4 leading and 10 trailing). The tender was 39' 1 3/4" long, 9' 7" high and 10' 10" wide. Fully loaded, it weighed in at 82 tons (164,000lbs). It had a capacity of 28 tons of semi-bituminous coal and 25,000 gallons of water.

The second series of Big Boys were equipped with 25,000 gallon/28 ton tenders which were originally designed for the 1942 Challengers. The difference between the 25-C-1 (nominal 25,000 gallons, C=cylindrical) and the 25-C-2 through 5 tanks was where the fuel bunker side slope sheet joined the outer skin.

Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" Locomotives in the USA
The 25 Big Boys were built in two groups. The first group of 20 locomotives, called "Class 1", were built starting in 1941. They were numbered 4000-4019. The second group of 5 locomotives, "Class 2", were built in 1944. They were numbered 4020-4024. The last revenue freight pulled by a Big Boy was in July of 1959. Most were retired in 1961.
Twenty-five Big Boys were commissioned exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in 1941. These massive locomotives were built to haul heavy equipment in support of the war effort, normally operating between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. The Big Boys are 133 feet long and weigh 1.2 million pounds.
