Place the tinned end of the wire in the slot and stake it in place. Use a soldering iron or gun to bring the click to soldering temperature and solder with rosin core radio solder. Wash the flux away with alcohol.

Even though I was able to attach the foot, the solder blob made the dial too high. When I filed the blob down, the foot came off.

That means you are melting fresh solder at the same time the soldering iron tip is touching the wire.
