Visual Evoked Potential/Response (VEP/VER) measures the electrical signal generated at the visual cortex in response to visual stimulation. The visual cortex is primarily activated by the central visual field and there is a large representation of the macula in the occipital cortex.
Responses evoked by unpatterned stimuli are “flash” VEPs or FVEPs. Patterned visual stimuli elicit responses that have far less intra- and interindividual variability than responses to unpatterned stimuli. PVEP testing will detect minor visual pathway abnormality with much greater sensitivity and accuracy than FVEP testing.
