WEBAug 2, 2007 · Re: older mercury outboards vs. older johnsons I've owned three Johnson/Evinrude motors - a 1960's 18hp, a 1974 65hp, and my current 1976 85hp. The 18hp was a flawless engine and I ran it hard for several years. It performed just fine when I sold it and I'll always remember that motor fondly.

WEBMay 12, 2017 · They had to be towed in. Come to find out, a valve spring gave dumping the valve into the cylinder destroying the engine. I was awestruck. I've never heard of that happening to ANY new outboard. Needless to say, Mercury is hanging a brand new engine on the back of the boat. An $11,000 dollar outboard lasted 3 hours. Unbelievable.

The pre-'76 mercs had mild steel drive shafts that were prone to rust pitting around the seal area over time---regardless of care and maintenace.

Most 2-strokes, unless they're a High Performance model or being raced, will run fine on 87 octane regular unleaded.

Mariners aren,t as expensive used because of the suspicion that they are a lesser line like the Force .
