I think for a MIG butt weld there should be a small gap so as wire feeds, it has at least somewhere for some of the excess filler to go to. Finally, I think lap welds aren't good unless there was a lap weld in the same spot originally, which generally isn't the case.

If you're really concerned it's easy to do a test, setup a piece of scrap sheetmetal the same guage as your parts, do the plug weld on the test piece then bend the pieces away from each other to 90 degrees, grab both pieces with a pair of vise grips and twist untill the weld fails, if the weld is good you'll pull a hole out of the base metal 1/8"-1/4" in diameter.

So, I have a nice floor pan with no ecoat removed, no grinding, no drilling, just a nice new pan sitting there on top of the rails. The rails by the way were cleaned with a Maroon Roloc surface-conditioning disc and a weld thru primer was applied.

WEBNov 24, 2013 · The rear seat pan spot welds to the brace from the bottom it looked like on mine. The trunk pan and brace are sort of sandwiched between the seat divider and the rear floor. Original braces were spot welded. If you don't have access to a spot welder, you can drill 1/4" holes every 1 1/2 inches in the braces and plug weld to the floor pan.
